Ghost in the Shell / 攻殻機動隊 Kōkaku Kidōtai is a Japanese media franchise originally published as a seinen manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow. The manga, first serialized in 1989 under the subtitle of The Ghost in the Shell, and later published as its own tankōbon volumes by Kodansha, told the story of the fictional counter-cyberterrorist organization Public Security Section 9, led by protagonist Major Motoko Kusanagi, in the mid 21st century of Japan.
Animation studio Production I.G has produced several different anime adaptations of Ghost in the Shell, starting with the 1995 film of the same name, telling the story of Section 9's investigation of the Puppet Master. The television series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex followed in 2002, telling an alternate story from the manga and first film, featuring Section 9's investigations of government corruption in the Laughing Man and Individual Eleven incidents. The year 2013 saw the start of the Ghost in the Shell: Arise film series with the release of the first two episodes. The third and final episode in the series is set to be released on June 28th, 2014.

THE GHOST IN THE SHELL SERIES

Stand Alone Complex was first licensed and broadcast in 2002 by anime television network Animax across most of Asia, as well as Latin America.
Stand Alone Complex contains 14 "Stand Alone" (SA) episodes and 12 "Complex" (C) episodes. Stand Alone episodes take place independently of the main plot and focus on Public Security Section 9's investigation of isolated cases. Complex episodes advance the main plot, which follows Section 9's investigation of the Laughing Man incident: the kidnapping and subsequent release of a Japanese CEO by a sophisticated hacker.

The series centers on the members of an elite cybernetic law enforcement unit known as Public Security Section 9 as they investigate cyber-crime and terrorism cases; these cases often are connected to their pursuit of an elite "Super Class A" hacker and corporate terrorist known as "The Laughing Man." A series of associated short comic animations, titled Tachikomatic Days, aired after each episode. These shorts star the Tachikoma "think-tanks" from the main series, and they typically relate directly to the story of the preceding Stand Alone Complex episode.

This is a four-part OVA series that serves as a re-imagining of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell.
Arise features new characters design, a brand new voice cast, compared with the casts of the original film and Stand Alone Complex television anime series. Maaya Sakamoto replaces Atsuko Tanaka as the voice of Major Motoko Kusanagi, Sakamoto having only previously voiced the Major as a child
To be honest, for me it doesen't feel like Ghost in the Shell anymore.

THE GHOST IN THE SHELL MOVIES

Literally it translates as "Mobile Armored Riot Police"
There are two animated films based on the original manga have been released, both directed by Mamoru Oshii and animated by Production I.G. Ghost in the Shell was released in 1995 and follows the "Puppet Master" storyline from the manga.

This one is an updated version of the original film and it was released in 2008. Basicly it is the same movie, the differences being the replacements of the original animations with the latest digital film and animation technologies, such as 3D-CGI. It includes a new opening, digital screens and holographic displays, and omits several brief scenes.
The original soundtrack was also re-arranged and re-recorded. In the new soundtrack, the Japanese voice dialogue was also re-recorded, with some variation from the original script to modernize the speech.

This is a sequel to the original film Ghost in the Shell (1995).
The story is loosely based on Ghost in the Shell manga chapter "Robot Rondo". Opening in 2032, Public Security Section 9 cybernetic operative Batou is teamed with Togusa, an agent with very few cybernetic upgrades following the events of Ghost in the Shell.

It is an OVA and part of the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series based on Masamune Shirow's manga Ghost in the Shell. It was produced by Production I.G and directed by Kenji Kamiyama.
The film was initially hinted as a new anime project collaboration with Bandai Visuals and Production I.G. and it was officially announced by Production I.G at the 2006 Tokyo Anime Fair.

This full-length OVA release, based on the futuristic anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex", follows Major Motoko Kusanagi as she investigates the so-called "Laughing Man" incidents, in a world where humanity and robotics have become inextricably intertwined, and police are left seeking out not just criminals in the flesh, but in cyberspace.
The Laughing Man is an expert hacker, able to hide his physical presence by editing himself out of video feeds and cybernetic eyes, concealing his identity by superimposing an animated logo over his face, and hijacking cybernetic brains altogether, all in real-time.
